Welcome to Season 2 of Into the Black, a Firefly RPG that takes place across multiple worlds and with multipe ships. In addition to established characters, we also accept characters that have appeared elsewhere within the canon of the Firefly universe (ie; Badger, Saffron, etc.), as well as original characters (background must be provided and approved). Play takes place both through posts within our Greatest Journal community, and through live play using IRC. It is optional to participate in live chat, but the suggested posting guidelines are to participate in or start at least one action/interactive post (third-person, in the community) per week, as well as introspective posts (first person, in your character's personal journal) as you see fit. This may vary according to the plots that are going on at the time, and how much involvement your characters have.

Into the Black does not operate in real time; instead, play takes place on an episodic basis. The game began from the never-filmed episode 15, and continued on from there with new episodes and adventures. Although a script is available for the 15th episode, things didn't quite work out that way for these characters. Events from episodes 1-14 are all assumed to have occurred as depicted; events from the Serenity movie are not being used in the game at this time.

Information on these pages is a combination of that found within the Serenity RPG, other Firefly websites with pertinent data, and our own musings and scribblings, as well as events that occur within the game itself. As such, some of the content here will most certainly not be entirely canon, and you probably shouldn't expect it to be, either.

Rules:

1. Try to post at least once every week. It's shiny.

2. OOC (out-of-character) commentary and conversation goes in the OOC community. Hence... the OOCness.

3. We're mellow. You should be too. No drama whoring.

4. Into the Black is an R-rated game. As such we request a cut and a warning for anything hugely graphically violent, super-sexual, or just plain potentially disturbing.

5. We don't believe in any set 'ships'; we started out from where we were on the show, and worked onwards from there. Obviously this means that Zoe and Wash are happily married, Kaylee and Simon are awkwardly interested, and Jayne and Vera are... well, as close as a man and his gun can be. Where they go from there is up to you.

6. Good grammar and spelling are your friends. Obviously, no one's perfect, but please try the best you can.

7. Don't go overboard with the Chinese. It's good to throw some in for flavor, but just like in real life too much Chinese can be very hard to digest. If you want to be extra shiny, put the English translation of your Chinese phrase in parentheses if it isn't one of the more common phrases.

Example: "Zhe shi shenme lan dongxi? (What is this garbage?)," he asked, shaking his head. "That's crazy talk."

8. Original characters must be accompanied by a background. Characters that are not currently on the ship must have a way to get into the story (a hook, if you will). If you need help coming up with one of these, we will assist you. We will not accept characters who are obvious clones of someone already existent (ie: My character is another girl from the same Academy, who, just like River, could kill you with her brain and is all messed up and stuff like that there). Be original - it's good for you!

9. If you want to do something to/with your character that's a major plot-affecting device, please get mod permission before introducing it. (Example: Jayne decides to try and turn Simon in again at the next station, Kaylee wants to try and build an amazing mechanical device, etc.)

10. We will be playing by episodes. Each episode will last approximately a month in real time - the amount of game time taken will vary based on the circumstances. At the beginning of the episode, the mod will announce the Episode Title, and give a brief description of the episode's setting and/or goal as it appears to the characters. For example, using Train Job - if this were one of our episodes, the summary would have included that they are pulling a train job for Niska, but would NOT include any of the complications that they wind up encountering along the way. That's the surprise, and the fun in playing. Obviously, how the characters react to the circumstances they are presented with affects how the episode will go. Back with the Train Job, if this had been in the game - Mal might have chosen not to return the medicine. Or he might have just declined the job offer in the first place. Yes, this means that the characters affect the story. And of course, there will be continuity, and consequences for actions... just like how in War Stories, Niska is none-too-pleased with the outcome of the Train Job...
