Rachel's mother died when she was only five - she barely remembers her, or the home and stable life she once had. Her father, Franklin, was a Watcher and an archeologist- and after his wife's death- he decided to travel extensively doing occult research, taking his daughter with him. Rachel has traveled all over the world, and has learned quite a good deal about the occult from her father and his collegues.

When she was 19 and in college, Rachel fell in love with a law student named Randal Smithe. Smithe was charming and handsome, and the two made a very good looking couple. When Rachel became pregnant a year later, she married Randal and she bought a house out of the money from a trust fund her mother's parents had left to her . Their daughter, Rebecca, was born six months later. After the baby was born, Randal's nature began to change. He expected Rachel to stay at home with the baby and take care of the house to the point that he own studies were suffering. Rachel, meanwhile- felt trapped by a life she'd never anticipated. She didn't know how to be a mother, and she was fairly sure that Randal wasn't entirely faithful. She wanted out. She stuck it out for a little over four years- but then filed for divorce.

Randal by then had collegues and connections- he painted Rachel as an unfit mother and wife, and made it look like she was the one having affairs. Not only was sole custody of Rebecca awarded to Randal, he was also given posession of the house and most of the assets assoicated with it. Rachel left her home and her child, and hasn't seen either since. She's spent the past eight years working for the Watcher's council, carefully avoiding more than casual relationships, never giving the full story of her past to anyone.
