The current year is 2012. Most of the events discussed in this timeline focus on the USA, particularly the NYC area as this is where the game will be taking place. Whenever new information is revealed, or significant events occur in game, the timeline will be amended with that information.
2003
Willow Rosenberg casts a spell to activate all living potential slayers.* While this enabled the group led by Buffy Summers to destroy the Sunnydale Hellmouth and beat back the First Evil, it also caused a series of cataclysmic events. Slayer power becomes diluted from being spread so thin - many slayers are being easily defeated, with no new potentials of that generation available to continue this lineage.
2004
New York City makes a bid for the 2012 Olympic games, setting up a television and web-based ad campaign. Plans include the construction of many new buildings, including an Olympic village set up directly across from the United Nations. This facility will feature 4,000 apartments in a secure complex by the waterfront. Other venues are being constructed, or renovated, in a circular pattern with this village as the central hub.
2005
New York's bid for the Olympics is accepted, and construction begins. Around the world, the slayer population continues to drop. The forces of good are scattered, and often ill-prepared - crime, both natural and supernatural, is on the rise. An ineffectual president is in office, fighting a pointless war with a small nation on the basis of suspected terrorism. The terrorist threat (whether real, or merely implied or even exaggerated) has become a terror that affects many citizen's everyday lives.
2006
In response to these troubled times and the continued threat against humanity, an anicent race of seemingly benevolent beings known as Guardians arise from a long slumber under the earth. Stronger, faster, and more capable than humans, these creatures are hailed by some as civilization's salvation; by others a sign of the coming of the biblical end times.
2007
The Guardians begin assisting local police forces in many large cities. Crime is at an all time low, but the media is begining to shift, covering a majority of pro-Guardian topics. Funding to many arts programs are inexplicably cut, and censorship of books, music, and speech is begining to rise. Guardian Centers are opening up arround the world - a combination community outreach and office building offering a youth program called Friends of the Guardians.
2008
Artists, musicans, poets and other creative types everywhere are starting to be seen as subversive and counter-culture. In a California coastal city, violence against these artistic people takes a violent turn when a concert is raided - a young man, the sole surviving member of his band, flees rapidly from the scene. He runs until he can run no longer, collapsing on a sandy beach, heaving and heaving on the shore until sleep finally overtakes him. In the morning, he is awoken by the sounds of a flock of seagulls diving in the surf. Fascinated, he watches, and as he watches he feels changed. Abandoning his former life, The Prophet takes his new destiny very seriously.
2009
People have begun 'disappearing' without a trace - first people who aren't entirely missed, but then, friends, co-workers, and occasionally... whole families. The Friends of the Guardians organization is begining to impliment survival and militaristic training. Some young people, upon coming of age, are being recruited into the Guardian ranks. Guardian control of governmental funcitons becomes increasingly more overt. It is suspected that many world leaders have been converted to the Guardian cause. Within the Guardian ranks, however, there is a small band of dissenters who disagree with the harsh politics of their leaders. This group is lead by a man known only as M5, and he refers to this group only as 'The Fifth Column'.
2010
The last remaining New York City school for the creative and performing arts is raided, with the students and teachers alike being herded onto buses for a special field trip to an 'education center'. They will never return. A 15 year old art student hears the commotion from a supply closet that she'd ducked into to collect extra brushes from at her painting teacher's request. Frightened, she hides until the noise stops, and then finds herself alone. Afraid to go home (her own brother is a Friend of the Guardians), Val begins living on the streets. She is completely unaware of her future destiny.
2011
Small gangs of rebels have been forming in many cities. One of these rebel groups is headed by David Davis of NYC. Little more than a boy himself, David manages to make contact with the Fifth Column and learns the horrifying truth of the nature of Guardians, and what their agendas may be. Unfortunately, David's small band is wiped out while attempting a supply mision. His younger brother, 'Juice', is devastated.
2012
The Prophet has a vision that brings him to NYC, where he collects a grungy street girl and keeps her safe. He names her Valkyrie, and tells her that soon she will understand..
An ocean away, cornered, frightened, and alone... the Last Slayer is about to die. She's been avoiding the Guardians for months now, but she can run no longer. Firsthand she's seen them take the souls of several fellow slayers, and she knows that there is only one hope - she must end her own life before they can take it from her. She's had the dreams, and she knows that the power in her veins must be passed on, for the sake of humanity. With one last prayer, she plunges the knife home...
* This is where our following of the canon Buffyverse ends. We do not follow the continuity of Angel's final season at all. This is where the AU kicks in.
